A quick recap in the happenings on Trial By Films over the past week…along with elsewhere in the film industry.
Alien: Covenant: 3/10 – Maybe genre fans will enjoy more of what they liked in the previous franchise entrants, but for any filmgoer other than the most diehard; Alien: Covenant is a lazy clone not worth seeing.
The Lion King: 10/10 – Firmly on the ‘Mount Rushmore’ of modern Disney features, The Lion King boasts eye-popping animation and an equally stellar song selection against a detailed and thoughtful story. Receiving massive critical and commercial acclaim, there is no question as to why The Lion King is often listed as one of the best, if not the best, film that Disney has ever created.
BEWARE: 2017’s Fall Releases To Avoid: A couple of weeks ago, we detailed the films we are most excited to see this fall. Now we bring you the ones you couldn’t pay us to watch. Don’t waste your time or your money on these!
New Trailers From This Week:
Mother! – We’re not getting a lot of information about what the storyline is here, but there is a raw intensity to this upcoming Darren Aronofsky film that demands our attention. This one could be great, or it might be a lemon.
The Death of Stalin – Armando Iannucci, the creative force behind HBO’s Veep and 2009’s In The Loop, takes his brand of vulgar political satire to post-Stalinist Russia. With a big ensemble cast, this period comedy should be crass and funny.
Duck Duck Goose – How is this a movie? At least we don’t have to deal with it for another eight months.
Other Interesting Film News:
Disney Starting Streaming Service – Disney is ending its partnership with Netflix and creating it’s own streaming service. While it’s Star Wars and Marvel properties are still being negotiated with Netflix, this means one more subscription service you might have to pay for.
Behind the Scenes at Laika – A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Laika Studios and how they are pushing stop-motion into the future.
Hollywood’s 2017 Summer Flop – Let’s not have an overly reactive response to this news, but between streaming services continued march into the film industry, rising ticket prices, and a vacuum in creative ideas in Hollywood – something needs to change and soon, before it’s too late.
New Movies In Theaters Worth Seeing:
There are a trio of films hitting theaters this weekend that might be worth a look:
2. Next up – Ingrid Goes West is a quirky indie drama/comedy about fame and friendship in the age of social media.
3. Finally, if you were a fan of 2011’s The Trip and it’s sequel, 2014’s The Trip to Italy; Steve and Rob continue their banter while dining all over the Iberian peninsula in The Trip to Spain.
